Replanted rainforests may benefit from termite transplants

Despite a bad reputation for their destructive abilities, termite ‘transplants’ may be necessary to give regenerated rainforests a boost. A multi-year study in the Daintree region led by visiting University of Queensland academic Dr Baptiste Wijas found termites were not thriving in former farmland replanted with rainforest species.

In 2025 the bioprinting market is estimated at $5.5 billion and is projected to reach $20 billion by 2034. Patents give inventors temporary protection from copying and without them companies may be less willing to invest, slowing down progress in developing lifesaving medical tools and treatments.
